Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Failing to realise that smug, affluent Californians are of interest mainly to themselves, Blake Edwards invites us to share in their every tiny worry, their every waking moment, as if the meaning of life itself was being probed. Stepping into the shoes of another midlife neurotic, this time panicking on the cusp of 60, Jack Lemmon succeeds in making him both sympathetic and irksome. Meanwhile his introspection has blinded him to the more pressing needs of his wife (Julie Andrews). The film is least convincing when overcooked, most punchy when allowed to breathe. Shot in the Malibu home of director Edwards and his real-life wife Andrews, the cast includes members of their family as well as appearances from Lemmon's wife Felicia Farr and son Chris.
