Review
Using German production facilities and creative personnel and opening with a long portrait of Paris by night, this silent drama - one of the costliest ever made in Britain - turns into a melodrama about a stripper whose aristocratic boyfriend plans to marry her own daughter, then decides to kill himself in his racing car. The film was heavily cut between its European and American premieres; when the original version was restored, it was given a jazz soundtrack specially composed by Mike Westbrook and performed by the Matrix Ensemble.
