Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This TV movie homes in on an incident early in the life of Jackie Robinson, who went on to become the first black player in big-time baseball and a full-blown national hero. Homicide's André Braugher supplies ample energy as the youthful Robinson, enduring bigotry while enlisted as a GI. Bruce Dern stands out in an impressive supporting cast that also includes Ruby Dee, who played Robinson's wife in 1950's The Jackie Robinson Story, and who returns here as his mum. Director Larry Peerce cleverly avoids any self-conscious analysing of the issues, thereby maintaining the power of the piece.
