Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

They really don't make 'em like this any more; a "gay nineties" musical, meaning happy, cheerful and set in the 1890s, that bounces along on enough high-octane energy to run the National Grid for a week. Rita Hayworth is at her most luscious and appealing as the chanteuse love object of Victor Mature, playing popular songwriter Paul Dresser, whose wonderful old songs give this warm, engaging movie its fuel. Watch out for great performances from Carole Landis and a pre-Bilko Phil Silvers, but what unites the movie's feel-good ingredients is the sublime choreography of Hermes Pan, the man partly responsible for Fred Astaire's legendary routines, and Val Raset.
