Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

The first of many adaptations of H Rider Haggard's tale, with Paul Robeson as the noble African who leads a party of terribly, terribly British treasure hunters across the desert and through the jungles to the mythical diamond mine. Inevitably, Robeson often breaks the journey by launching into song - great voice, pity about the loss of narrative momentum. Cedric Hardwicke plays the traditional white hunter, Roland Young offers a sense of humour, while John Loder and Anna Lee embark on a gooey romance. Aimed fair and square at the American market, it remains an old-fashioned adventure, spiced up by a certain jungle mystery.
