Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

In this bracing Warner Bros western, Errol Flynn stars as one Wade Hatton, who rides into Dodge, sees that "knavery is rampant" (as Variety described it in 1939) and sets about cleaning up the town with military precision. Why Warners couldn't come clean and call him Wyatt Earp is a mystery. It's knockabout stuff, exuberantly directed in lush early Technicolor by Michael Curtiz, and is in sharp contrast to John Ford's later My Darling Clementine as well as more modern, revisionist trawls through the Earp legend. Flynn is in swashbuckling Robin Hood/Captain Blood mode and Olivia de Havilland, as usual, is the woman in his life.
