Summary

Family adventure starring Keith Carradine and Tina Majorino. In 1962 Rockport, Maine, animal-loving harbour master Harry Whitney takes in an orphan seal pup. The seal, called Andre, is nursed back to health, and befriends the Whitney family, particularly seven-year-old Toni. As winter approaches, Harry realises that it is time for the seal to migrate south.

Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Set in the early 1960s, this perfect family fare tells the story of the rather cute seal of the title, which is adopted by precocious newcomer Tina Majorino, playing the animal-loving daughter of harbour master Keith Carradine. Members of the local fishing community are worried that Andre will affect their catch, which leads to the inevitable conflict. It's sickly sweet stuff, but Andre (actually played by a sea-lion) is undoubtedly endearing, and it's nice to see Carradine in an atypical role. Director George Miller (not the Mad Max man) milks the sentimentality for all it is worth, but that won't bother the youngsters, who will be enraptured by it.
