Summary

Gerard Depardieu plays a sleazy Paris nightclub owner and ex-detective who flies to Hong Kong to rescue the young son of a friend murdered by the Chinese mob. He leaves the boy in the hands of an earnest priest (Christian Clavier), who escorts him back to Paris. Soon Clavier and Depardieu are fighting it out, each shadowed by his good or evil guardian angel.

Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Director Jean-Marie Poiré followed up his blockbusting time-travel fantasy Les Visiteurs with this patchy comedy, which he co-scripted with that film's star, Christian Clavier. A mix of character comedy and perilous slapstick, the action centres on the shady-dealing Gérard Depardieu, who encounters his guardian angel while trying to protect a friend's son from the Triads and recover $14 million in stolen loot. Depardieu is in typically rollicking form, but it's Clavier, whose naive priest has a thoroughly resistible guardian angel of his own, who shamelessly steals the show. Subtle it's not, but there are laughs amid the mugging.
