Review

A star rating of 5 out of 5.

Written by the incomparable team of Charles Brackett and Billy Wilder, and starring Claudette Colbert, Don Ameche and John Barrymore (in one of his best late roles), this is right up there with that other Wilder and Brackett collaboration, the classic Ninotchka. Add Mary Astor and Rex O'Malley in support, Hedda Hopper in a featured role and expert direction from Mitchell Leisen, and the result is one of the most stylish and enduring comedies of the era. The story involves an American girl (Colbert) who arrives penniless in Paris at midnight. After catching the eye of a Hungarian taxi driver (Ameche), she finds herself masquerading as a wealthy baroness, hired by a rich man (Barrymore) to lure away his wife's lover. Sophisticated and hilarious, this sparkles, sizzles and delights.
