Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

While it might lack the visual splendour of Zhang Yimou 's Red Sorghum or the dramatic intensity of his Raise the Red Lantern, this is still a superbly realised piece of work from the Chinese director, combining the historical sweep of an epic with the finely etched characterisations of a chamber drama. Although it incurred the wrath of the authorities, the film isn't a condemnation of the errors of Mao, but a tribute to the spirit of the Chinese people who survived them. Gong Li seems to be incapable of giving a bad performance, but she's more than matched by Ge You, who won the best actor award at Cannes.
