Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Directed by Bruce Paltrow and starring his daughter, Gwyneth, Duets follows six would-be singers as they travel across America to take part in a big-money karaoke competition. Pleasingly, the movie takes its time fleshing out its characters, who range from a starstruck waitress to an escaped con, and there are some terrific performances, notably from Paul Giamatti as a burnt-out rep and singer Huey Lewis as a veteran karaoke hustler. Ironically, the most insipid performance comes from the pallid Miss Paltrow, though she does display a decent, non-dubbed singing voice. The film ends limply, but that's a small criticism of an otherwise mature and entertaining, character-driven drama.
