The Undying Monster

Made because The Wolf Man was such a success the previous year, this Holmesian affair about a cursed English family places the emphasis on brooding atmosphere rather than horrific effects. Director John Brahm made his name with shadowy costume melodramas (like Hangover Square), and this thoughtful, if stolid, outing is one of his best, if only for the brilliant striking-clock opening which sets the gloomy tone.
