Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Although a lot more believable here as a hot-shot lawyer than he was in The Devil's Advocate, Keanu Reeves is still the weakest link in this otherwise proficient throwback to the courtroom thrillers of the 1990s. Reeves is a cynical attorney hired by an old friend (Renée Zellweger) to represent her teenage son (Gabriel Basso), who has been accused of murdering his abusive father (Jim Belushi). It looks like an open and shut case - and the fact that Basso refuses to talk to his lawyer hardly helps his cause - but it soon becomes apparent that not everyone is telling the truth about the events leading up to the killing. Director Courtney Hunt (Frozen River) cleverly intercuts the courtroom drama with often contradictory flashbacks, although experienced legal eagles won't have much trouble in spotting the final twist in this Grisham-lite tale.
