Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Franco-British artist Charlotte Colbert makes her directorial debut with this satisfying psychological horror, which resonates in the post-MeToo era. Alice Krige plays ailing actress Veronica Ghent, who heads to a rural retreat in Scotland in order to recuperate from a double mastectomy. While there, she takes part in self-help sessions led by Rupert Everett's extravagant guru. Rather than finding inner peace, though, Veronica is confronted with her teen past, as memories flood back of experiences with an abusive director (Malcolm McDowell). Musing on illness, the ageing process, and toxic masculinity, She Will has a lot going on. Its sinister cinematography, and a wild score from Clint Mansell, only add to the percolating atmosphere of unease. Led by the excellent Krige, the cast fully commits to Colbert's unsettling gothic vision of the supernatural, resulting in a film that is both lean and effective.
