Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

It's not essential to know where Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones fits in the history of hip-hop before watching this profile, but it would help, as graffiti-artist-turned-director One9's directorial debut presumes a good deal of knowledge of the American rap scene in the two decades since the release of the landmark album Illmatic (1994). In returning to his roots in New York's sprawling Queensbridge Projects, Nas appears humble, as he knows that things could have been very different - he could well have followed best pal "Ill Will" Graham to an early grave. He expresses his gratitude to his parents Fannie Ann and Olu Dara Jones (a jazz musician) for inspiring him and his scene-stealing younger brother Jabari (aka "Jungle"), as well as the mentors who spotted his potential. However, this isn't just a walk down a troubled memory lane with the focus of this laudatory but never fawning picture later switching to the making of the album that caught the public imagination.
