Review

A star rating of 5 out of 5.

This magnificent MGM musical from producer Arthur Freed (Singin' in the Rain, An American in Paris, Gigi) and director George Sidney ((Scaramouche, Annie Get Your Gun) is supremely satisfying, its pleasures increasing with every viewing. The cast couldn't be bettered, with Ava Gardner hitting a career high as Julie LaVerne, never more moving than in the scene where she's left on the river bank to the strains of William Warfield singing Ol' Man River (a good substitute for the fondly remembered Paul Robeson in the 1936 second screen version). The show was Broadway at its peak, and here the Kern-Hammerstein score receives a definitive rendering. The plot, with its themes of miscegenation and compulsive gambling, is shamelessly adult, and done full justice by Howard Keel and Kathryn Grayson, while the opening sequence of the showboat's arrival is a superb marriage of music, style and colour.
