Peter Dinklage stars as a shrewd bounty hunter with a taste for new-fangled technology in this dark and quirky low-budget western. When unhinged bank robber Cut Throat Bill (Juliette Lewis) and her gang cross paths with god-fearing siblings Jack and Lula Parker (Levon Hawke and Esme Creed-Miles), Bill takes a shine to Lula and kidnaps her. So, Jack enlists the help of gun-for-hire Reginald Jones (Dinklage) and his motorised hearse to rescue her. There's not an awful lot of plot here, and the resolution is surprisingly mundane, but what keeps you watching are the rich, tragic characters. Most of them are damaged - some before the film starts, some during the action. Lewis in particular gives an intriguing turn as the complex villain of the piece. Meanwhile, Dinklage, for whom this was reportedly a passion project, is perfect as the self-serving bounty hunter with his own harrowing past. Some dark humour, haunting images and grisly action certainly help distract you from the linear plotting, even if the climax underwhelms.
