Writer/director Mike Judge previously turned a satirical eye on American society with the antics of animated idiots Beavis and Butt-head and cult comedy Office Space. Here, he takes the dumbing-down of the USA to its logical extreme. Luke Wilson plays a US Army private who is declared the "most average" soldier and cryogenically frozen in a secret experiment. Something goes wrong and he wakes up 500 years later in a world so unremittingly stupid that he's the smartest man alive - but that's not hard when the president's a porn star wrestler. Judge's nightmarish vision of a lowest common denominator future where water has been replaced by an energy drink is hilarious, as well as depressingly believable. And although Wilson's everyman is a bit too much of a blank slate to really care about, the gaudy visuals and cynical gags more than compensate.
