Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This feel-good shaggy-dog story was a critical and commercial smash Down Under, scooping best film at the Aussie equivalent of the Baftas and becoming the country's biggest-selling home-grown DVD release. Based on the bestseller by Louis de Bernières, Red Dog is the touching but endearingly quirky tale of a scruffy kelpie who appears seemingly out of nowhere and is adopted by the inhabitants of a remote mining community in Western Australia in the 1970s. At first, the mutt is shared among the townsfolk, but he eventually settles on American bus driver Josh Lucas (Sweet Home Alabama) as his master. Kriv Stenders's whizz-bang direction helps paper over the somewhat episodic plotting and he is well served by a talented ensemble cast - although it's the marvellously expressive canine star Koko who steals the show. And, as with all the best animal tales, even hardened blokes will struggle not to choke back a few tears at the end.
