Drama starring Soumitra Chatterjee, Subhendu Chatterjee and Sharmila Tagore. Four young men from Calcutta leave the city for a holiday in the country, where they encounter a number of locals and two particularly interesting women who call into question their very outlook on life.
Satyajit Ray was personally encouraged in his early film career by the great French director Jean Renoir, and his influence is clearly evident in this Bengali reworking of the classic featurette Une Partie de Campagne. Seeking to escape from the stress of Calcutta, four friends travel to the forest, where their encounters and misadventures cause them to take stock of their lives. Supremely capturing the warmth and glow of a summer's day and taking sly shots at the bourgeois mentality, Ray draws inspired performances from the leading quartet, whose flirtations, high jinks and arguments make for irresistible viewing.
