Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Penned by Garry Marshall and Jerry Belson, this underrated western spoof is a splendid showcase for John Astin, who, apart from his stint as Gomez in The Addams Family TV series, never quite fulfilled his comic potential. Timing every set piece and throwaway gag with equal precision, he revels in the role of the west's most loathsome bandit, who is determined to go straight and win the heart of schoolteacher Pamela Austin. Milton Berle and Mickey Rooney are standouts, while Dick Shawn nearly steals the show as a hilariously incompetent lawman.
