Review
As anyone who has seen Amadeus will know, slighted court composer Antonio Salieri considered himself responsible for Mozart's death. But masons, music-hall managers, monarchs - among others -, all come under investigation in this complex costume thriller, as secret policeman Armin Mueller-Stahl seeks a darker explanation that will satisfy his conspiracy theories. While it lacks the scale of Milos Forman's Oscar winner, this is still a stylish picture, with director Slavo Luther allowing the evidence to build into a case that is at least plausible, even though it may have as much to do with fact as the various theories on Jack the Ripper.
