Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Valerie Solanas was famous for 15 minutes when she tried to assassinate pop art king Andy Warhol in 1968. This endlessly fascinating case history from director Mary Harron delves into the complex personality of the lesbian feminist author and finally makes sense of what tipped her over the edge into paranoid fantasy. Rarely do films capture a cultural era as precisely as this evocative saga, which does it masterfully with a sure, sophisticated style and with wit and drama to spare. Lili Taylor is flawless as the angrily disruptive urban guerrilla and Jared Harris is just perfect as the white-wigged Warhol. It's Stephen Dorff's electrifying take on transvestite superstar Candy Darling, however, that is certain to swivel most heads.
