Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Surviving an indifferent start, Ann Hui's semi-autobiographical drama, gradually develops into a moving study of a strained mother-daughter relationship. Returning to Hong Kong in the early 1970s after studying broadcasting in London, Maggie Cheung is resentful of Chang Shwu-Fen's dismissive attitude towards her newly-acquired western ways. But, when she accompanies her mother on a visit to her Japanese relatives, she learns about her Chinese grandparent's petty cruelty and the lonely pain of exile her mother had suppressed for so long. Typically revealing the tempest beneath the surface, Hui directs a touch methodically, but the performances, especially Cheung's, are deeply affecting.
