Spy drama starring Humphrey Bogart as Rick Leland, who is given a fake dishonourable discharge from the US army and assigned to follow a trail leading to suspected enemy agents.
This wartime melodrama reunited the cast and crew of The Maltese Falcon. The original script, written in 1941, described a Japanese plan to attack Pearl Harbor, but when that really happened the script was rewritten, setting the action near the Panama Canal. Humphrey Bogart plays Rick - as he would the following year in Casablanca - a spy ordered to keep tabs on Sydney Greenstreet. What happens is purely formulaic, and enjoyable only because of the interplay between Bogart, Greenstreet and Mary Astor. John Huston directed all but the final scenes: ordered into the Signal Corps, he was replaced by Vincent Sherman.
