Summary

Fantasy comedy starring Dwayne Johnson and Ashley Judd. Ice-hockey player Derek Thompson is an abusive and aggressive thug when he's out on the rink, with a reputation for knocking out his opponent's teeth. But that bad attitude comes back to haunt him after he dashes the hopes of his girlfriend's daughter - he's sentenced to work as a tooth fairy, and the tutu and wings are non-negotiable.

This energetic vehicle for Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson hardly stretches the former wrestler, as he plays Derek Thompson, a washed-up ice hockey star best known for battering his opponents. But worse than that, Derek crushes the childhood dreams of his girlfriend's young daughter when he tells her there's no such thing as the tooth fairy. Cue a trip to Fairyland, where Derek is sentenced to a week as a real-life tooth fairy to make amends. Stephen Merchant, Ricky Gervais's long-standing collaborator, takes on his first major Hollywood role as Derek's reluctant mentor, and they make for a surprisingly amusing odd couple. The slapstick humour comes thick and fast as Derek, complete with wings and leotard, struggles with his new line of work. It does take a while to get going, is ultimately very predictable and lapses into sentimentality towards the end. But Johnson is an eminently likeable lead and the impressive supporting cast, including Ashley Judd, Julie Andrews and Billy Crystal, makes up for Johnson's lack of acting finesse.
