Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

The first film version of Victor Hugo's classic tale is a masterpiece of the silent era. It showcases magnificent sets and Lon Chaney's definitive take on deformed bell-ringer Quasimodo, with a secret infatuation for gypsy girl Esmeralda. From under a 72-pound rubber hump, and with his face covered by lumps of putty, the grotesque Chaney gives an eloquent performance, full of pathos and yearning, which dominates the screen despite all the other epic trappings. It's for his inimitable genius alone that this sprawling saga is now most fondly remembered.
