Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This popular and sentimentalised biopic of the legendary tenor was tailor-made for MGM's own lyric tenor, Mario Lanza. The ramshackle screenplay doesn't really matter as Lanza performs such full-blooded arias as La Donna e Mobile, Celeste Aida and Vesti la Giubba in that remarkable golden voice, although the actual hit song from the movie was The Loveliest Night of the Year sung by Lanza's co-star Ann Blyth. This was Lanza's biggest success in an all-too-short career that ended with his premature death at the age of 38.
