Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

No longer quite what Variety called a "smasheroo", this somewhat outmoded satirical soufflé on British upper-class mores is nonetheless diverting. A comedy romance from director Ernst Lubitsch, whose famous "touch" is still very much in evidence, it stars Jennifer Jones as a lady plumber doubling up as a maid for an English family who are all vague to the point of imbecility. Charles Boyer is a Czech writer who arrives in the household having fled the Nazis, and the plot involves his relationship with Jones, propped up by a huge and excellent supporting cast that includes Peter Lawford and C Aubrey Smith.
