Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Calling yourself the galaxy's greatest comic takes some front, but 2000AD has cause to back up that claim more than most, as this documentary convincingly shows. Launched in 1977, the sci-fi-skewed weekly caused an immediate sensation in the UK. Strips such as Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper and Strontium Dog were subversive, ultraviolent and morally ambiguous, providing younger readers with the illicit thrills they craved, while giving older audiences something that was intelligent, boundary-pushing and politically engaged. The comic's wider cultural impact was also seismic, but it began to lose its way in the 90s after many of its talents left to blaze a trail in the US with such genre-redefining titles as Watchmen and Sandman. Pat Mills, 2000AD's original editor and unshakeable paterfamilias, recounts the turbulent history of his unruly offspring with a veritable fire in his belly. And that energy is felt throughout Paul Goodwin's film as a whole, with the colourful testimony of 2000AD's writers, artists and fans being punctuated by animated strips of the comic's most famous creations. Skilfully assembled and comprehensive in its research, this is a must-see for comic fans and essential viewing for Dredd-heads.
