Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Never one to avoid controversy, Takashi Miike's uncomfortably atmospheric horror concerns a serial killer at large in a Japanese high school. Hideaki Ito stars as Mr Hasumi, a charismatic and youthfully handsome English teacher who has the trust of the faculty and students alike. The school is not without its problems, with instances of bullying and abuse as well as pupils cheating in exams. And that's all the discord Hasumi needs to begin his reign of blackmail and murder, which he carries out with the calculated efficiency of a psychopath. Miike maintains the tension well before changing gears for a prolonged bloodbath finale, which is played out to maximum gratuitous effect. While some of the film's initial eeriness is certainly lost by the end, the unnerving premise and sheer helplessness of the victims can't fail to make an impression.
