Summary

Three thieves hatch a plan to rob a New York bank. While the heist goes off without a hitch, they soon find that stealing the money was the easy part, as a series of unexpected obstacles makes getting out of the city with their ill-gotten gains impossible. Comedy, co-directed by and starring Bill Murray. With Geena Davis, Randy Quaid and Jason Robards.

Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Bill Murray chose an offbeat, small-scale project for his directorial debut (in tandem with writer Howard Franklin), and the result is this warm, slightly melancholic comedy. Murray also stars, playing a reluctant robber who pulls off the perfect bank raid dressed as a clown but who is driven to despair trying to leave the city with partners in crime Geena Davis and Randy Quaid. The three leads are good value and there is fine support, too, from Jason Robards Jr as the cop on their trail. It's not a laugh-a-minute affair, but there are some nifty gags and you should find yourself chuckling away sympathetically throughout.
