Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Assembled from Jules Renard's novels and one of his plays, this is a glorious remake of the touching rite-of-passage drama director Julien Duvivier first attempted as a silent in 1925. Avoiding the sentimentality that tainted so many Hollywood studies of childhood - even in the midst of his reunion with "father" Harry Baur - this is a resolutely grown-up account of the misery endured by red-headed Robert Lynen at the hands of his uncaring mother, Catherine Fontenay. Beautifully filmed by Armand Thirard, the film acquired added poignancy after Lynen's execution while fighting for the Resistance in 1944.
