Paul Newman stepped into the role earmarked for James Dean (who would have been perfect) and delivered a brilliant, Brandoesque screen portrayal of legendary outlaw Billy the Kid (as envisaged by writer Gore Vidal) in this terrific movie debut from director Arthur Penn (who went on to make Bonnie and Clyde). Character actor John Dehner got the break of his life co-starring as Pat Garrett, and there's a clever bit of casting with Hurd Hatfield (The Picture of Dorian Gray) as a nervous chronicler of the times. The film was heavily truncated on its UK cinema release, but in the complete version we can really appreciate the subtlety of editor Folmar (Rio Bravo, A Star Is Born) Blangsted's handiwork.
