Family comedy starring Jodie Foster, Helen Hayes and David Niven. A conman tries to convince a rich widow that he has found her long-lost granddaughter in order to plunder her estate.
In her fifth outing for Disney, Jodie Foster is in fine fettle as a tomboy turning the tables on bungling crook Leo McKern. Adapted from Michael Innes's book Christmas at Candleshoe, this is the kind of family entertainment that everyone seems to have forgotten how to make - good story, fine acting and no special effects. The star of the show is David Niven, who is clearly having a ball beneath his various disguises, but there's also solid support from Helen Hayes as the owner of a stately children's hostel that will be closed down unless some buried treasure is unearthed.
