Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

The secret of surf movies is to ensure there is plenty of sun and sand, and as many shots of muscular, tanned, teen bodies arching through the breakers as decency will allow. Director Tommy Lee Wallace resists the temptation to tamper with what, essentially, is a winning formula, ensuring that this surfing sextet pass through their rites of passage in an orderly fashion to the sound of rock hits of the day. This being Hawaii in 1959, he is able to slip in a few novel touches, such as the Japanese kid who, while thinking his homeland was hard done by in the war, can't accept his father's traditional code.
