Set in Nazi-occupied Poland, this harrowing true-life drama reveals how Irena Gut, a Polish nurse forced to serve as housekeeper to a high-ranking Nazi, hid 12 Jews right under his nose. Prompted by news that all the Jewish citizens in the area are to be exterminated, she smuggles a group of them into his cellar. However, when one of the women falls pregnant, they are faced with a grim predicament: abort the pregnancy or risk a baby's cries being heard? This English-language, Polish/Canadian co-production may sound like an exercise in miserabilism, but on a scale of Nazi occupation movies from The Sound of Music to Schindler's List, it's located somewhere in the middle, with a cosy, life-affirming approach to the Holocaust, albeit with mass hangings and brains being bashed out on cobbles. Excellent performances - especially from Yellowjackets star Sophie Nélisse as Irena and Dougray Scott as her Nazi boss - elevate some skimpily scripted characters, but the compelling nature of an almost unbelievable true story keeps you gripped.
