Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

These three intimate portraits of the lesbian experience in America cross over three different decades, from the 1960s to the millennium, and are as uneven as they are ground-breaking. 1961 is the standout, featuring a daring performance by Vanessa Redgrave as the surviving member of a 50-year lesbian relationship who must face the loss of her life partner. It's almost too good an act for the next two tales to follow. 1972 stars Chloë Sevigny in a provocative, semi-amusing piece about a group of gay college co-eds who come to view their own prejudices as they become politicised in the early years of the feminist movement. Last and least is 2000, produced and directed by Hollywood's then leading lesbian couple Anne Heche and Ellen DeGeneres (who also stars). A wannabe comedy about two women going to any and all lengths to have a baby, it still doesn't "deliver", even with the presence of Sharon Stone.
