Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

George C Scott was in towering form in this handsome adaptation of Dickens's yuletide favourite. Rather than settling for easy reformation, Scott's Scrooge gives the ghosts as good as he gets and has to be dragged away from ideals forged during a difficult youth. Unfortunately, the members of a stellar supporting cast lack Scott's rigour and, with the notable exception of Roger Rees, turn in sentimentalised caricatures that dishonour both the source and the star. However, director Clive Donner laudably avoids cheap visual effects and makes atmospheric use of his Shrewsbury locations.
