Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Unassuming to the point of shyness, this is nevertheless an affectionate portrait of adolescent life from first-time director Craig Bolotin, previously best known as the co-writer of Ridley Scott's Black Rain. The setting is the uneventful Long Island suburbia of the early 1960s, where impressionable youngster Eliza Dushku becomes the fascinated witness to a generation-gap battle between her neighbours - daughter Juliette Lewis and mum Helen Shaver. The story is very slight, but the young Dushku is a revelation, and Lewis and C Thomas Howell as Lewis's unsuitable beau also deliver convincing performances.
