Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

A Hollywood oddity that became a landmark for members of the European surrealist movement in the 1930s, with Gary Cooper and Ann Harding as lovers who communicate their passion in dreams. Off-the-wall casting (Cooper is not very effective) adds to the sense of alienation in this adaptation of George du Maurier's novel and John Nathaniel Raphael's play, while the finale's fulfilment of l'amour fou received a rapturous reception from the surrealists.
