Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This rather earnest resurrection of the Burke and Hare bodysnatchers tale is pitched more as a dark moral fable than a horror film. Based on a script written by Dylan Thomas in the 1940s (and not made because of censor problems), producer Mel Brooks persuaded veteran Hammer horror director/cinematographer Freddie Francis to rework it. The result is high on period detail - often uncomfortably so in capturing the poverty of the time - but low on Grand Guignol chills, although Timothy Dalton, Jonathan Pryce and Stephen Rea do give it the necessary touch of evil.
