Hollywood's take on the Cuban revolution, with Omar Sharif as Che Guevara and Jack Palance as Fidel Castro. Sharif looks oddly convincing - just like the poster every middle-class Marxist had over his bed - and the movie certainly celebrates Che's status as a revolutionary martyr and Robin Hood figure. As Castro, though, Palance is a rascal and a drunkard, a caricature of the man every patriotic American loves to hate. Sharif's contract included a "conscience clause" that allowed him to veto any scene he felt distorted the facts, but this is not a movie that's remotely believable. Richard Fleischer directs efficiently, as one would expect, on Puerto Rican locations.
