A middle aged restaurateur begins to feel the desire to roam and realizes that one day each week, his mother's apartment will be empty all afternoon. He makes several attempts at seduction, only to learn that it is much more complicated and difficult than he could have imagined.
Happily married for more than 20 years, Barney Cashman craves to have just one extramarital affair, as if to prove his manhood and romantic worth. Neil Simon's script, based on his Broadway hit, was probably dated the day it opened and was seen mainly by out-of-town audiences up for a day on Broadway, ready to laugh at even the laziest one-liner and howl with mirth at Simon's raunchiness, even though George Axelrod had done it years before in The Seven Year Itch. As Cashman, Alan Arkin brings his trademark tics and seediness, and there are three beauties lined up to frustrate his longings: Sally Kellerman, Paula Prentiss and Renee Taylor.
