Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Stephen Sommers clearly has an affinity for Mark Twain. Not only did he write and direct 1993's The Adventures of Huck Finn, but he also co-scripted this retelling of the story about the Missouri orphans who witness a graveyard killing and get caught up in the subsequent wrongful arrest and court case. Brad Renfro follows his triumph in the previous year's The Client with a suitably mischievous performance as Huck, but Jonathan Taylor Thomas as Tom Sawyer betrays his lack of experience in some of the more demanding scenes. Disney takes typical care with the trappings, but Norman Taurog's 1938 film The Adventures of Tom Sawyer remains the best movie version of the tale so far.
