Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Family traumas abound in a conservative suburban community where Teresa Wright's major goal in life is to protect her teenage daughter Sandra Dee from the knowledge and stigma of illegitimacy, while John Saxon's young life is complicated by the reappearance of his long-absent failure of a father, James Whitmore. As a vehicle for teen-stars when teen culture was on the way up, this outmoded drama of small-town life was a curious choice, and it's difficult to know what audience it was aimed at. This remains true although, as directed by Helmut Käutner, it's OK as lower-case soap opera for lazy viewing. (Released as The Wonderful Years in the UK.)
