Summary

Romantic comedy co-written and directed by Billy Crystal, who also stars with Debra Winger and Joe Mantegna. An unlikely encounter in Paris between a basketball referee and an airline employee leads to a whirlwind affair and marriage. But, as their friends remember the events, romance can often become a casualty of the harsh realities of married life.

Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This romantic comedy has a cosily familiar feel to it - perhaps because it has borrowed its anecdotal flashback structure from Broadway Danny Rose, its initial premise from Avanti! and much of what happens thereafter from When Harry Met Sally .... It begins with Billy Crystal accompanying his father's body to Paris, where a baggage handling mishap introduces him to airline employee Debra Winger. They fall in love and swiftly marry, but can they retain the romance? The film is well played - though Winger isn't really cut out for comedy - and has both wit and insight. Its plus points are diminished, however, by the nagging sense of déjà vu. Co-writer/producer/director Crystal is so much in the thrall of Billy Wilder and Woody Allen that he rather loses touch with his own inimitable style.
