Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Director Andrés Waissbluth demonstrates once again the camera's talent for deception in this simmering Chilean thriller. By revealing events from the viewpoint of each of his three main protagonists, Waissbluth is able to withhold the significance of seemingly minor events until we are as deeply embroiled in underworld danger as Néstor Cantillana and Juan Pablo Miranda, the shanty-town brothers who have fallen for Antonella Ríos, the slinky dancer lover of Santiago mobster Alejandro Trejo. The seedy lowlife atmosphere permeates every scene, although Waissbluth's blend of Cagney, film noir and Tarantino doesn't always gel. Nonetheless, this drama is a satisfyingly violent experience for aficionados of the hard-boiled crime genre.
