Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Directed by American Tim Whelan, this was hardly a feather in producer Michael Balcon's cap. But comedies of this kind went down a treat with audiences in the 1930s and it was their success that later enabled Balcon to make the Gainsborough costume dramas and Ealing comedies. Star Jack Hulbert teamed with Guy Bolton and WP Lipscomb on the script, which has clearly dated badly but still raises the odd smile. Jaw-jutting Hulbert is hardly hero material, but he and Anna Lee make a pleasing partnership as they unmask desert drug smugglers.
