Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Lifelong friendships come under scrutiny in this well-meaning and sometimes touching drama about a dying man who calls on his best friends to ferry him to a remote beach in Wales for a final holiday. Leaving aside the wisdom of transporting someone so frail away from the reach of any doctor, Hattie Dalton's debut feature never quite generates the intimacy needed to land the right emotional punches. The cancer-stricken James (Benedict Cumberbatch) comes across as waspish and even cruel at times, while his entourage (JJ Feild, Tom Burke and Adam Robertson) are a bumbling, self-centred bunch whose characters are rarely developed beyond their occupations. Cumberbatch, however, makes the most of a thankless part and manages to inject some humour into a film that many will find more morbid than melancholy.
